v The Islands of the Bahamas are the closest country to the United States and only a few miles from Miami. It is made of 23 inhabited islands and thousands of islands without people. Pirates once ruled this country, and their buried treasures may still be there. The Bahamas v Egypt is a country in the second largest continent on earth, Africa. It is one of the oldest countries in the world. If you go there, you can ride a camel across Sinai Desert or ride a horse through a safari. You could even dive into the Red Sea and explore its magical waters and marine life. Egypt v Switzerland is a country in the center of Europe. It has the tallest mountains in Europe, the Alps, and some of the tallest mountains in the world. Mont Blanc is its tallest mountain. Would you like to climb it? v Weekly Project: Traveling with Miss Rumphius v Open your own travel agency. Begin by designing a travel brochure on one of the places Miss Rumphius visited. It could be The Bahamas, Egypt or Switzerland. Visit one of the sites on the left to collect information. Don’t forget to include the following:
v Remember to illustrate your brochure. You will be presenting your brochure of “Traveling with Miss Rumphius” on Friday. Be creative and informative. v Poet/Illustrator of the Week Shel Silverstein Shel Silverstein was a composer, an artist, and the author of numerous books of prose and poetry for young readers. Some of his most famous poetry collections are Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. His work is humorous and sly. You will enjoy it. v Author/Illustrator of the Week-Barbara Cooney Barbara Cooney was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1917. Her mother was an artist and encouraged her to illustrate book. She has illustrated 110 books and was awarded 2 Caldecott medals. She has also written 18 books. If you want to read more about her go to Barbara Cooney. She once said, “of all the books I have done, Miss Rumphius, … is one of the closest to my heart. Like Miss Rumphius, Barbara Cooney traveled the world, settled down by the sea and tried to make the world more beautiful. Also, like Miss Rumphius, she was fond of the lupines that bloom early in the summer near her home in Maine. Do you want to see a portion of this book? Click here. Miss Rumphius is a personal narrative because like Miss Rumphius, Ms. Cooney traveled widely and made the world a more beautiful place with her work. Also, her favorite flowers are the lupines.
